Everyone’s favourite Scottish rock duo (Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton) tour their first new album in 16 years!

Arab Strap started out as an intimate project with home-recorded tapes shared between friends, but after the unexpected success of their inimitable debut single ‘The First Big Weekend’ they quickly found themselves, along with pals Mogwai, as some of the most exciting and cherished music coming out of Scotland. The band’s first gig was recorded live for John Peel, who became an early devotee. The band went from indie record label Chemikal Underground onto the major label Go! Beat and then back again to Chemikal, touring the world and funnelling life’s experiences into a unique concoction of music that explored beauty, sadness, intoxicants, sex, love, and death all rolled into one.

Big tunes like the First Big Weekend will be on offer as well as tracks from their new album. You can also catch Aidan on Iplayer at the moment and his documentary ‘Where You’re Meant to Be’ about rewriting traditional Scottish songs and touring them across the country. A really interesting watch that has shades of the cult classic Calum Kennedy documentary ‘Commando Course’ about touring Scottish entertainers going to wee schools, village halls and pubs in the Highlands and Islands. The event is back to bring the local LGBT+ community and its allies together to celebrate.

The theme for this year’s LGBT+ Pride event will be a ‘just be yourself’ message! You’re encouraged to show up and celebrate yourself as well as everyone else in the community and associated with it.

This Saturday the 28th of May, the streets of Aberdeen will be a rainbow of colours, flags and beautiful people representing all parts of the LGBT+ community.

Aberdeen Taxis has the lowdown on what’s happening on the day!

Pride Parade

11:00am – 12:00pm

The parade begins at 11 am from Holburn Junction (Albyn Place) and will end at Marischal College at around noon. The wonderful Annie Wallace (best known for portraying Sally St. Claire in Hollyoaks) will be leading the parade.

Queuing for the parade starts at 9 am, so be sharp if you want to be near the front as there is expected to be a great turnout this year.

Pride Village

1:00pm – 8:00pm

Have your wristband ready for the hijinks planned in the Pride Village at Beach Boulevard.

The Village has tons going on:

Main stage – 2013 X Factor UK finalist Sam Callahan will be headlining from 4 pm, and various local artists entertaining will be during their bit to entertain the masses until 8 pm.

Over 30 charities will be in the village providing freebies, advice, information and activities.

Outdoor bar, Tiki Tent, and various food stalls. Music from DJ Jan Schofield, brings you the big tunes to make Pride the place to be!

Bouncy Castle, children’s play area, storytime, and much more for the whole family

The LGBT+ Pride event is organised entirely by volunteers and all money raised for the event goes back into putting together a fun-filled FREE family day where the community can remember its history, celebrate the present & embrace the future as a community.

The Aberdeen Craft Beer Festival at the Taproom is a celebration of craft beer and Aberdeen’s finest food vendors and musicians. This will be one of the Aberdeen April Events you won’t want to miss!

The 2-day festival offers you the chance to try over 80 delicious beers from a number of local and further afield breweries all while enjoying great local food accompanied by live bands, solo artists and DJ’s.

Breweries confirmed included 71Brewing, Brewtoon, Burnside Brewery, Cullach Brewing, MOR beers, OGV, Spey Valley, Mad Bush and Vault City with more to be announced in the coming days.

Independent Venue Week – Celtic Folk Punk Doubleheader at Krakatoa

It’s Independent Venue Week from January 31^st and what better way to show support for our great independent venues by staggering along to Krakatoa’s doubleheader of Celtic Folk Punk?

The Gallowgate Murders are from Glasgow and bring their fast and heavy Celtic punk vibe with them. They toured pre-lockdown with the mighty Rumjacks, so you know they know how to bring the noise. Incidentally, The Rumjacks play Krakatoa on the 18^th August 2022 – something for the diary.

Co-headlining is The Lorelei: stalwarts of the scene and stone-cold Legends! They’ll bring the party, just bring yourself and a friend!

Topping off the night 11 pm – 3 am is Neon Lounge. Described as “a nocturnal refuge for the free-spirited, an incandescent Dionysian antidote to clubbing”.
